ACT, SAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT and other competitive exams: I give students a lot of problems available on the internet, or recast them in alternative form to improve the student's mathematical thinking. I give a sample test that can be a fraction of the actual test and observe if the student can respect the time limit but still comes up with a good grade.

College and University level mathematics: I motivate the students why (s)he is studying a certain mathematical topic (e.g. probability) in the first place, and when (s)he understands that, the next step is to create visualization and examples from real life. The final step is to start doing abstract mathematics, which becomes easier when the first two steps are accomplished.

ESL: I start with easy topics, in both spoken and written English. I gradually increase the difficulty of the topics and see when is the first moment the student starts to have difficulty. Each student has their own level - I've taught students having from A1 to B2/CA level of English and in each case, I took this bottom-up approach to detect their weaknesses.

My approach to teaching physics and mathematics is guided by two main principles:

1) Learning through doing – these are subjects that require active practice to hone skills and understanding. I am always trying to engage the student and I avoid a “lecturing” style at all costs!

2) Tailoring the lesson style to the needs of the student. For some students, particularly at university admissions level, I will be looking to stretch you and ask you to search for questions to make you think deeper about the subject. For others, I understand that a more considered approach is needed, particularly since mathematical subjects can often seem daunting. One size definitely does not fit all.

Maths – For younger students (GCSE and earlier) I focus on building understanding of basic principles by trying to bridge the gap between algebraic and geometric manipulations and the more “real-life” topics that students also learn. I think encouraging students to see the subject holistically really builds their confidence and stops maths from seeming an unmanageably vast challenge. For older students I usually employ a more problem-solving driven approach. With most A level students, I believe that the key is deepening their understanding of calculus, because most of the course builds on its ideas. Therefore, unless the student expresses a different preference this is usually where I start. For the MAT and university admissions I encourage students to develop mathematical flair and to construct rigorous mathematical arguments.

Physics – I tend to focus on making sure that students really understand fundamental principles. Physics is at its core a simple subject, that relies on a few basic ideas. I want students to feel comfortable going back to first principles, rather than falling back on rote learning (which is not the way to do physics!). At A Level and below this largely means developing a rigorous understanding of Newton’s laws, kinematical relations and conservation laws. For example, even the usually challenging topic of electricity can be largely understood purely through the conservation of charge and energy. I encourage students to link together the mathematical and qualitative components of their course, and to think of them as a holistic whole. For university students and students seeking university admission, I seek to challenge them as much as possible and to probe their grasp of the subject through problems, “paradoxes” and exposure to new ideas that build on their current knowledge base.

STEP Tuition Approach

STEP is best approached by going through a large number of past paper questions, although students can often get stuck along the way. My teaching style aims to look at your personal mathematical abilities in the areas of the STEP syllabus and help you develop your ability to tackle the STEP exams. I aim to go through STEP questions, giving hints along the way to encourage you to learn how to solve the most challenging STEP questions, whilst also highlighting any key themes and tricks that are applicable across many STEP questions.

MAT Tuition Approach

MAT involves a range of challenging and unfamiliar mathematical and logical problems that really test their mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills. MAT is often best approached through experience with previous past paper questions, although often students can get stuck along the way. I look at your personal mathematical abilities in and around the areas of the MAT syllabus, and develop your skills using a guiding hand in the areas you personally find challenging. When tutoring for the MAT, I focus on three main areas: perfecting the mathematical knowledge and methods required for the exam; developing the student’s ability to tackle challenging unseen problems in novel ways through past paper questions; and managing time in the exam to optimise the student’s mark. TMUA & CTMUA Tuition Approach

TMUA and CTMUA involves solving short but challenging mathematics problems at a relatively fast speed. When tutoring TMUA and CTMUA I look at both these areas in depth, helping you to develop your problem-solving skills in maths and logic, as well as teaching exam tips and tricks to best utilise your time in the exam itself to optimise your results! I tailor tuition to each specific student so that they are as comfortable as possible with the tuition style and the syllabus, so that they can best develop their skills and get the results they need

Oxbridge Application and Interview Preparation Tuition Approach

Often university applications can be daunting, especially when it comes to writing personal statements and preparing for interviews. I provide advice when it comes to mathematics personal statements, helping the student show off their skills and interest in the subject. In interview preparation and practice I aim to develop your skills on verbally communicating your mathematical approaches to problems, and how to demonstrate your ability to understand the prompts given by interviewers.

University Mathematics Tuition Approach

Studying mathematics at university is often challenging, requiring the student to understand and process a large amount of mathematical content, as well as use mathematics methods in a range of novel and different ways. When tutoring university mathematics, I focus on two main areas. Firstly, I work on crystalising and understanding the difficult concepts and theory on the course. Further, I work on developing the student’s ability to apply this theory to unfamiliar questions, so they are able to answer tough and unfamiliar questions.
