The work I set varies depending on the particular university, and initial level of the student. Since the questions found on admissions tests such as the MAT and STEP are so different to maths taught at school, it is imperative to go through lots of past paper questions.

This ensures the student is best prepared to tackle the unseen material which comes up on these exams. My teaching style centres on independent thinking; if simply given the answer to a question, the value in solving it oneself is lost, as is the potential to learn from it in the future. As practice questions are sometimes limited for these assessments, it is very important to get the most out of each available past paper.

Physics is very much based on understanding complicated concepts. If one understands them properly, they are bound to excel. Therefore, I always take the time to explain, and then re-explain difficult concepts to my student, even if it takes the whole session; we can’t move on if they don’t understand it.

Graduate study also requires a great deal of independence. Therefore, I would aim to help prospective applicants create a personal statement that demonstrates what actions they have proactively taken to pursue deeper understanding of their chosen field and that conveys relevant information in a concise manner.
