RNA polymerase plays a crucial role in transcription by synthesising RNA from a DNA template.
RNA polymerase is an enzyme that is fundamental to the process of transcription. Transcription is the first step in gene expression, where the information in a gene's DNA is transferred to a messenger RNA (mRNA). This process is carried out by RNA polymerase, which binds to the DNA at the promoter region and separates the two strands to create a transcription bubble.
The RNA polymerase then uses one of the DNA strands as a template to synthesise a complementary RNA strand. It does this by adding RNA nucleotides that are complementary to the DNA strand, in the 5' to 3' direction. For example, where the DNA has an adenine (A), the RNA polymerase will add a uracil (U) to the RNA strand, and where the DNA has a cytosine (C), the RNA polymerase will add a guanine (G) to the RNA strand.
There are different types of RNA polymerase, each with a specific role. In eukaryotes, RNA polymerase I synthesises ribosomal RNA (rRNA), which forms the structural and functional core of the ribosome. RNA polymerase II synthesises mRNA and some small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs), which are involved in splicing. RNA polymerase III synthesises transfer RNA (tRNA), which is involved in protein synthesis, and some other small RNAs.
RNA polymerase also plays a role in the termination of transcription. Once the RNA polymerase has synthesised the entire gene, it encounters a termination sequence in the DNA. This causes the RNA polymerase to detach from the DNA and release the newly synthesised RNA.
In summary, RNA polymerase is a key player in the process of transcription. It is responsible for creating the transcription bubble, adding RNA nucleotides to synthesise a complementary RNA strand, and terminating transcription once the entire gene has been transcribed. Different types of RNA polymerase also have specific roles in synthesising different types of RNA.
