History/Government and Politics Tuition Approach

Firstly, in both GCSE and A-level, the subject content differs slightly depending on the exam board, so I would review the specification for the student’s relevant board and structure my tuition approach according to the content. I will go over specific topics that the student particularly finds challenging, at a slower pace, with frequent check-ins to make sure there is a clear understanding. But depending on the student’s needs I will adapt my teaching to a student’s needs and goals; sessions will range from lessons, knowledge-checks, revision classes and exam practice as required.

Within the sessions we will critically engage with and analyse primary sources and practice writing essay plans with a specific focus on exam technique. Closer to the exam period, I will focus on past-paper questions to allow the student to practise exam technique and get used to the examination process and timings.

My aim is to allow the student’s knowledge and skills grow so they can confidently take the exam, as I understand how tricky exams can sometimes be!

Throughout my sixth-form career (2018-2020) I tutored various GCSE French student’s one-on-one weekly, who were struggling in class. This involved reading and practicing essays, grammar exercises, reviewing class-assigned homework and practising pronunciation and conversational French.


Further, I mentored History GCSE and A-level students both in group settings and in one-on-one environments. University applications

Having attended both the University of Cambridge and University of Oxford, I am fully aware of the myths surrounding the application process, especially the interviews! I am keen to dispel those myths and help you with writing an excellent personal statement and ace the interviews for Natural Sciences. I can also help you work through NSAA past papers and give you some general tips for approaching the questions.


I believe strongly that for tuition sessions to be effective, a good working relationship needs to be established. In our first session we will get to know each other, work out your strengths and weaknesses and discuss what you would like our sessions to focus on. I will then use the skills and knowledge I have developed through my 3 years of classroom teaching and 6 years of private tutoring experience to help you make progress.

I am flexible in my approach (no two students are the same, so no two tuition sessions should be the same!), but I always come back to techniques that are proven to be effective, such as spaced repetition, active recall and detailed work on exam questions. We will do lots of worked examples to help apply your knowledge and get you exam ready!

What you can expect:

-I teach on my iPad with an Apple Pencil - lots of diagrams, visuals, worked examples - and use other pieces of software to enhance your learning (e.g. Google Docs, collaborative whiteboards). No boring slideshows here!

I will firstly introduce the concept of the content by showing the importance and reasoning behind the topic.

This would be done by giving real world examples regarding the topic to allow them to understand its significance. I will then show them some example questions and demonstrate how to solve these questions. I will also use graphical methods to illustrate my points as this makes the concept easier to visualize.

After that, I will give them example questions to solve in class and ask them to show me their working. This is for me to grasp their understanding on the topic and to find out if any parts of the course is unclear. Besides, I will handpick exercise questions based on their weakness I identified in class and previous exercises completed.

I will also introduce past year questions so that students can manage their exam expectations and better gauge the difficultly level of exams. This would allow them to effectively strategize their exam preparation.
